Inclusive User Design. The Forgotten in Digital Design · LAB

Digital Product

How to build accessible and inclusive digital products to reduce the digital divide and contribute to a more just, democratic, and equitable society.

This was the premise of the Runroom LAB Inclusive User Design. The Forgotten in Digital Design, where Ángeles a.k.a. Helen Sotillo (Redbility) highlighted some points we sometimes forget when designing.

If we forget the mouse at home for a meeting, we will have to navigate with the keyboard. If we want to watch a video but don't have headphones, we will miss the subtitles if we are in a library. For these and many other reasons, designing an accessible product has become a universal necessity in any digital business.

Learnings from the LAB on Inclusive User Design.

Some data:

  • 15% of the world's population has some type of disability so we cannot consider a design usable if it is not accessible.
  • The World Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) is a very important tool to ensure accessible design.
  • Accessibility is not an optional feature, but a necessity to ensure inclusion for all people.
  • Accessible design not only benefits people with disabilities, but also improves the user experience. Considering factors such as color, contrast, typography, or navigation.

We also share the presentation so you have handy resources and very useful tools like Figma plugins or Colorblind checkers. You will find the complete list in this document.
